I am honored to be a part of an organization that can be the voice for those considered voiceless in today’s world. The elderly we serve are for the most part isolated. That they are poor only compounds the loneliness and isolation they feel. I had never before come across a population who had so little support. In my many years of non profit work with a focus on the elderly, HealthSET is the first organization that I have worked with that truly has the heart for the clients we serve. Bill, a former veteran was going blind and could barely walk. His walker was so wobbly that it was not really a safe means of support for him. His apartment was filthy and had barely any furniture. One day Bill collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. Marian, our Nurse Care Manager, acted as an advocate for Bill. When the hospital wanted to release him, Marian wouldn’t let them because of his terrible living conditions. She arranged for Bill to get a new walker and at least temporary residence at the Veterans Administration Nursing Home. In the meantime Marian worked diligently so that Bill could have permanent residence there. The touching part of this story occurred when Marian went to go visit Bill at the nursing home and he didn’t know yet that this was to be his permanent home. He said to Marian, “I didn’t sleep all night because I was worried I won’t have a place to live after this.” Marian then told him he would never have to worry about his home again and that he could have all the comforts the Veterans Administration Nursing Home provided for the rest of his life. No elderly person should ever have to worry about where they are going to sleep at night. HealthSET makes sure these low-income elderly who are so often forgotten by society, are cared for and remembered. To us they matter.	About HealthSET The mission of HealthSET is to extend the healing ministry of Christ by Serving and Empowering the low-income elderly in the Denver metro area through nursing, education, and advocacy to Transform the quality of their lives. HealthSET strives to fulfill its mission through programs that serve, empower and transform seniors and preserve their dignity and self-worth. HealthSET helps seniors stay healthy, live independently and navigate the health care and human service systems to access the resources they need. HealthSET was created by the Wheaton Franciscan Sisters in 1988, who worked with different orders of the Sisters of Charity to replicate a successful model that had been developed in Milwaukee. The intent of the Sisters was to attend to the needs of the underserved including the poor, frail, elderly population. Our first Health Promotion Clinic was held that year at a Denver Housing Authority (DHA) subsidized senior residence, Thomas Bean. In January 2004, HealthSET formalized its affiliation with Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI), a not-for-profit health care organization located in 19 states. Although this arrangement required direct reporting and accountability to the national CHI office, HealthSET retained its own 501(c) (3) status. In January 2006 CHI transferred sponsorship of HealthSET to Centura Health, a non-profit that works in partnership with CHI.   GET INVOLVED WITH HealthSET!
